Shinohayu 101: National Middle School Champion 4

Shinohayu is the only series this month (as expected) but the chapter is longer than usual at 36 pages. Toki hopefully will be back next month. Before that, if possible there will be another MakoMeshi release, probably around mid-January.

Saki 254: Bearing Fruit

Ritz made a blog post a couple of weeks ago with a few answers to reader's questions. Nothing too important but I wrote a translation below if you are interested.

Ritz's post 22.12.01 (answers to reader's questions)
- Kanbara's car was handed over to her by her mother.
- The players from the Evergreen team (other than Akado): one of them joined a pro team while the others either moved to a different corporate team or quit mahjong and became normal company employees.
- Kasumi might keep the record of largest breast size in the series until the end.
- Toki and Saki Biyori are treated as canon.
- I have files and notes with birthday-related info that hasn't been released. I'd like to put it all together someday.
- When Mairu speaks to Himeko in chapter 189, she uses polite language because in her mind she is no longer club president. (At the end of the chapter, when Mairu says "Let's play in the same team again sometime" she uses the polite form instead of the casual one.)
- Momo's sauce is good for yakitori.
- In cover 2 of volume 18, the person behind Kainou Yoshiko is Shiratsuki Shino.

Saki 253: Diligence

There is a Toki chapter waiting translation but the last releases were so close together that there was no time to do it properly. Saki was given priority but Toki is not far behind. Probably in 3 or 4 days if all goes well.

Some deep thoughts from Hisa...

Shinohayu 100: National Middle School Champion 3

Well, Shinohayu has reached 100 chapters. Congrats to Ritz and Aguri for making it this far.

So, who will be the Intermiddle champion, 14 years before Nodoka wins the title?
At least I think it's 14 years...
v2: change in page 10.

Saki 252: High Speed

It's South Round in the Lieutenant match already. If they can avoid dealer repeats, that's only 4 rounds left. Or 3 plus the critical Last Round. But Hisa may not even last that long...

MakoMeshi 20: The Dongpo Pork of That Day

Finally, I completed this chapter which I've been trying to do since September. Hopefully, next one won't take as long. Ideally, I'd like to do one chapter a month or so but depending on the other series and such, it may vary a bit.

Toki 63: The Strong 2

Note that for this chapter there is an additional page at the end with translation of the background text on page 18. It's just something extra, not necessary to understand the chapter or anything. But it was too complicated to insert into the page itself and Mekimeki made the effort to write all that so I wanted to include it somewhere.

Next, should be a Makomeshi chapter. Probably next week and before the next Saki.

Saki 251: Ventilation

The lieutenant match continues to be quite intense with the threat of one or even multiple yakumans from Takami during her last dealership. Ako desperately trying to keep the number of rounds to a minimum, Hisa enduring the pain in her arm and Myeonghwa...

Ritz pointed out a small mistake at the top left corner of page 9. The 2m tile was originally a 3m. Obviously, that was wrong. It's been corrected in this translation.

Saki 250: Intense Pain

At the end of last chapter, Ako tried to tell the others that cooperation is essential if they want to avoid a potential series of yakumans from Takami. How will the other two respond to Ako's silent request for help?

Toki 62: The Strong

If the previous chapter was "The Weak", this one is "The Strong". At the Osaka Prefectural Tournament, it's flowers vs darkness, and Senriyama in the middle!

Shinohayu 98: National Middle School Champion

Shinohayu returns. The Intermiddle Final is at the decisive point. Who will become the next Middle School Champion?
With color pages and magazine cover!

Toki will be next. Then maybe another Makomeshi.

Saki 249: Halfway

Hey, it's been a while since the last Saki chapter... Where were we? Oh yeah, right at the halfway point of the final. The second hanchan of the lieutenant match is about to begin!

MakoMeshi 19: Secret Good Rice Club (2)

There was supposed to be a Shinohayu chapter this month but it wasn't published. No reason given but probably related to the release of new volumes next month and Ritz having too much work. Toki was already expected to skip an issue so nothing new this month.

On the other hand, I contacted MoyaiSubs and Akio Translations will be doing MakoMeshi from now on. In case you didn't know, this series already ended. We'll be translating the remaining chapters whenever there are no other series to work on (like now).

The raws and most of the cleaning and redrawing in this chapter was done by MoyaiSubs so let me thank them again for all their work. This chapter continues directly from the previous one: the four Nagano sergeants were having a secret meeting to eat all kinds of delicious rice-related dishes. And here's the continuation...

Toki 61: The Weak

We get to know a little more about Fujishiro Nanami and the people around her...

Achiga 42: Lasting Impression

As stated in the previous post, the Achiga series will go on hiatus for an indefinite period of time. This is the last chapter of this part of the series. The reason for the break is apparently to prevent Achiga-hen from catching up or overtaking the Saki main story.

It will probably take years for the series to resume (if it resumes) but you may remember that Achiga already ended once and then surprisingly restarted many years later. So it may happen again.

Shinohayu 97: Consistency

The Achiga series is going into an indefinite break to prevent it from catching up with the Saki main story. It is not known when the series will resume. This month's chapter (ch42 which will be translated soon) will be the last chapter for now.

Meanwhile, here you have the latest Shinohayu. Toki and Achiga will be released in a few days. Ritz pointed out a scoring mistake in page 8 which has been fixed in this translation.
v2: Yoshiko > Yuuko in page 3.

Saki, Achiga, Biyori, Shinohayu, Toki - All chapters

Downloading a large number of chapters one by one can be a bother. To make things easier, this post contains links to the folders where they are stored. This way, you can choose which chapters you want to download or even get all chapters for each series in one go.

Currently, these folders contain every translated chapter to date. In the future, the most recent chapters may not be in the folders yet, but I'll try to keep them regularly updated.

Saki 248: Bubble & Toki 60: Role

Saki. We have reached the halfway point of the final. A new volume will be released in September so Saki is now taking the inevitable pre-release break. We should still have new chapters of the spinoffs at the end of July.

Toki. The Prefectural tournament begins while Toki thinks about the role of vanguards...

Achiga 41: Gratitude

This month, we have Achiga and Toki but not Shinohayu. Unfortunately, Ritz did not have enough time to finish the rough draft so Igarashi Aguri could not make the drawings. Anyway, Toki will be up in a few days as usual. Achiga, you'll find below.

To compare with the Saki version, it begins near the end of Saki 229...

Saki 246: Mother

After that little flashback on the origins of Myeonghwa, the lieutenant match continues but can anyone stand up to the wind goddess? Well, someone better do something fast because it seems like Ako just can't take it anymore!!

Achiga 40: Aim

This chapter is a close retelling of Saki chapters 228 and 229. The wins and the expressions and everything is much more dramatic than in the original though. Anyway, it's Achiga only this month. Shinohayu is on break, as expected, and for "various reasons" (according to Mekimeki) Toki is also absent.

Saki 245: Made by Nature

This chapter has everything. Like, literally everything a Saki chapter could have: ridiculously large boobs, Kunihiro's butt, panels without tone, panels with tone, flashbacks, color pages, scoring mistakes, Kunihiro's butt (worth mentioning twice), panels with only a sketch, weird sci-fi stuff, ominous silhouettes... and even mahjong (a little bit). Well, I guess there is one thing missing and that is Saki herself, but you know how that works...

On a serious note, Ritz acknowledged a couple of mistakes in this chapter. First in page 8, it originally said 5200 (points) when it's actually 7700. This has been corrected in this translation. Second in page 9, the scores are not entirely right. No big differences though, just a few thousand points up or down, and everyone keeps their positions. But I'll give the correct scores here: 1st Rinkai 138000, 2nd Shiraitodai 112800, 3rd Kiyosumi 83300, 4th Achiga 65900 (currently in South 3).

Toki 59: First Match

Here's the Toki chapter. The plotlines are converging. The Prefectural Tournament and the return of Fujishiro Nanami.

Shinohayu 96 & Achiga 39

This month, we have all 3 series thankfully. Shinohayu and Achiga are below while Toki will be up sometime next week.

Shinohayu. Kanna's last hope...?

Achiga. We are still in Saki ch227 but also a continuation of the conversation in Achiga ch26.

Saki 244: Enma

The first thing you'll notice about this chapter is that it has quite a few non-inked, no-tone panels. Nothing that we haven't seen before but it's been ages since we had such an unfinished chapter. Ritz must have been at the limit here.

About the chapter's title. Enma is the Japanese name for the King of Hell in Buddhist mythology, also known as King Yama. We could localize the chapter and replace Enma with "King of Hell" but I thought it was better to leave it like that.

Finally, there is one confusing, ambiguous line in page 11 so let's clarify it here. Rinkai's coach says that in semifinals, Myeonghwa got the top score in that "section". Hmm, okay but what is that "section"? Does it mean the lieutenant match?
But no, that can't be because the top scorer in the lieutenant match of semifinals was Hisa. Myeongwha was merely 3rd and she didn't "pull ahead of the others", rather both Hisa and Hiroe shortened the point gap with her.
Well, it turns out Myeonghwa was the winner of the first hanchan of semifinals. That's what that "section" must mean here. This is not easy to figure out because the mid-game scores were not given (this was in chapter 123) and it needs to be calculated manually.

Saki 243: Crowd

That first double page is very nice but it's hard to say if this really happened or if it's just a symbolic image in Hisa's mind for the many people she has met thanks to mahjong. Dream and reality seem to mix together in this chapter.

Shinohayu 95: Forward

This chapter is a bit longer than usual at 35 pages. Resolution is also higher now just as they did with the other magazine. However, this is the only spinoff this month. Achiga was not released as Ritz couldn't finish the rough draft on time (for the second month in a row). Igarashi even drew a little comic about Ritz confessing to the sergeants the draft is not ready and Sumire responds by shooting an arrow at Ritz lol. Toki was already scheduled to skip this issue. It seems all 3 series will be back next month with color pages though.

Anyway, have fun with Shino!

Saki 242: Kindred Spirit & Toki 58: Piling Up

With this issue, the digital scans for Saki have now higher resolution. Finally, thank you. Hopefully, they will do this for the other magazine too, the one where Shino/Toki/Achiga are published.

Saki. Hisa's backstory (part 3).

Toki. This is the mahjong equivalent of training with weighted clothing, I guess...

Shinohayu 94: Regret and Sympathy

Shinohayu. The format of the tournament is not explained in detail but it seems that after the morning matches, an unknown number of players (more than four) advanced to the "final league", which was already mentioned in chapter 92. Then the top 4 players from this "final league" play in the last match of the final to decide the winner.
I'm just saying because it may be a little surprising if some player mentioned in chapter 92 is not present in the final or the other way around.

Saki 241: Memory

There was a brief post from Ritz saying no Achiga chapter this month. There will be Shinohayu though. Toki does not depend on Ritz but that should be fine as well.

Hisa's backstory (part 2).

Toki 57: Position

This chapter is like a sprint race, with Toki's cleaning stance similar to a runner getting into position before the starting shot (On your mark...). But the 'position' in the title also refers to Toki seeing her own position/standing in a new light after finally deciding to join Senriyama's mahjong club.

Shinohayu 93: A fan's big sister & Achiga 38: The Last Day

Shinohayu. As Shino tries to find out more about her next opponents, the last opponent turns out to be... eh!?

Achiga. Sergeant Match. Follows along Saki chapter 227.

Toki 56: Senpai

Yokeguchi Yayoi was the president of the mahjong club when Toki and the others were in elementary school. Now that they are in middle school, the situation is a little different...
