Reread the previous chapter to refresh my memory, and stumbled on this: what was that about every option other than 9-pin ron supposedly giving Mineoka a comeback win?
She has 22,100 points; Shino has 41,100. She has baiman at best, right? (Closed chin’itsu + pinfu + iipeikou or ittsuu = 8 or 9 fan. Heck, that’s baiman even with tsumo. Plus she mentioned baiman herself in one of her thought bubbles.) She isn’t the dealer. So her hand is worth 16,000 points, right? There are no riichi sticks on the table and no honba. If she were to ron any tile off non-Shino, Shino would still be on top, wouldn’t she?
It seems the scores between Mineoka and Shino were meant to be a just little closer together so that baiman ron off someone else would be enough for Mineoka's win. 9p ron is the only winning combination that gives her haneman, and that is meant to not be enough.
That can't be because a 9p ron off Shino would still be a comeback win. What makes 9p ron special is that it gives her haneman instead of baiman. In case of direct hit, that's no problem.
Right, I forgot about Yuuko. So 9p ron is always bad. Then the line is "except for 9p ron, all the other tiles would give her a comeback win" (and it is implied that it means tsumo or direct hit to Shino).
If Shino finally wins the national individual title, I wonder if the story will then focus more on team tournaments like the famous interhigh from ̶2̶0̶ 10 years ago.
Okay, we finally have to see some Shino ability apart from getting more lucky/playing stronger with a lot of people watching. :)

I think that the line is poorly phrased. The intention is probably "she can ron anything except 9p from Shino for a comeback win".

ReplyDeleteI expected Kainou to have 2 pairs of dragons given her power, but it looks like Shino may become the national champion for the first time.
