Perhaps your impression comes from Hisa spending one year alone at Kiyosumi's mahjong club. Then Mako joined on Hisa's second year. But since Mako is one year younger than Hisa she could not have joined sooner than that.
Yes, I always thought that scene where Mako joins the club was their first meeting. The manga never said it was or not, so I kinda of assumed it was because that scene also showed Nodoka and Yuuki joining the club in the following year, so it must have gave me the impression it was the same for both cases.
The recent flashback in chapter 234 already suggested this—I think it’s from the same era as the new flashback—although it wasn’t quite made explicit. But before that, yeah, I also had the impression they had first met in high school.
Thanks for the translation I used to think that Hisa withdrew from the match because of hearing the news of her parents' divorce, but apparently her match with Mihoko caused her.
