The original version doesn't say if Hamumu is a 'he' or a 'she', but it felt a bit weird and forced to see Ryuuka calling Hamumu 'it' all the time so I went with 'he'. It probably doesn't matter anyway.
I agree. Some people may say 'It's just a pet. Get over it.' But losing a pet is still very sad, especially when you are a kid. No wonder she's so worried about Toki being sick.
Alternative (and even sadder) point of view would be that Ryuuka never cared about Toki at all and only ever saw her as a replacement for her dead hamster.
Ugh, do you remember start of this manga? Ryuuka said to Toki smth like "promise that you will never become someone special for me". Now we can understand what she was referring to. Knowing how their relationship developed in the future (I mean becoming battle lesbians Kappa and Toki having clinical death) I can feel that Ryuuka isn't good at chosing something special that is not extremely fragile.

This is a Yuri franchise. Everyone is a girl, human or hamster.
I see your point but there are minor male characters in every series, like Kyoutarou or Richardson.
