Saki ch158: The Night Before

When writing character's names in romaji, Ritz uses the western order (surname last) and I use the eastern order (surname first). There are no rules about this so both ways are correct.

I've always used the eastern order so far and nobody has complained so I assume most of you are fine with this but let me know otherwise. I like using the eastern order but I wouldn't mind using the western one if the majority wanted it that way. The only issue with using the eastern order is that sometimes there'll be chapters like this one where the western order is used by the author and this introduces some inconsistency in the naming.

Ok that's all, enjoy the chapter:

  1. Heeeey... Looks like we will have fully covered 5th place match? Well, 2 more years or so till finals.
At least I can enjoy some Toki and Mairu.

    1. Yeah, another good thing about the 5th place match is that noone has plot armor. Anyone can win.

  2. I think it doesn't matter since people that are reading riichi mahjong stuff would probably already knows those stuff.

    Thanks Akio!

    1. Yeah, you might be right. I just wish Ritz would use the eastern order.

  3. What's most important is that you're actually willing to listen to the fans. I respect that.

I prefer the eastern order myself.

On the other hand, is writing out "senshu" really necessary?

    1. No, it's like writing "-san" or "-sensei". I think some other time I wrote "player" (as in "player Onjouji").

  4. I like eastern order. My reason is that because it's the order they actually use in Japan, but if some western person goes there they won't change your name order to match theirs, so I believe we should do the same here and respect their order.

Also, you never know when you will find a pun in the name that requires the original order.

  5. Thanks, Akio! I appreciate your work, but I have one criticism. I don't know how good the raw quality is, but the cleans/leveling could be better. There are a lot of random dots and it would look nicer if the black/white contrast was adjusted.

    1. I know it doesn't look perfect but the quality of the raws is much worse and this chapter was particularly bad. I clean and level every chapter to make it look nicer. First I level the whole page and then I manually improve certain areas. To do even more would simply take too much time.

  7. I think eastern/japanese order for japanese characters and western order for western characters is good. Thanks for the release as usual.

  8. Thanks!

I can handle either order myself without thinking much, but I do prefer English name order in English text, just like I prefer English words and English phrasing.

Speaking of which, if you’re looking to improve your translations further, I think phrasing is the area that could use most improvement. Sometimes sentences end up sounding a bit off when you try to preserve the original meaning too hard by keeping the same word order.

    1. I know, sometimes it can be hard trying to keep the balance between preserving the original meaning and sounding more natural. I'll see what I can do to improve that.

  9. On page 11 I believe you swapped the vice-captain/captain for Mairu/Himeko unless it's talking about club position instead of team position. Thanks for the translation.

    1. Oh, that was on only during the first 5 minutes after I uploaded the chapter 3 days ago. I noticed it and changed it very fast. I thought no one had downloaded it yet. If you download it now, you'll see it's fixed.

  10. I think the inclusion of -senshu (player) is good, since it give impression that the characters are in some sport event as participants/competitors.

  12. If it's not too much extra work would you be able to include a quick summary of Ritz's blog posts with chapter releases?

    1. Yes, I could do that. Not a full translation but just a summary or the most interesting bits.
