Shinohayu 110: Visit

When a western name appears in Shinohayu is usually written in katakana. There is more than one way to transcribe names from katakana into alphabet letters so we can never be completely sure of the exact spelling for such names (unless one day Ritz decides to write the name in romaji).

Still, I did my best to write the most likely spelling for that name. And even if that was not what Ritz had in mind, it can't be too different, just an alternate spelling of the same name.

On another note, I updated chapter 108 because I realized it had an error in page 28 when Shino's uncle is talking about the trip. Nothing too important but it comes up again in this chapter so I wanted to fix it.

  1. Thank you!

The powers are usually so restricted to mahjong that I always end up surprised when people literally just teleport.

I've wondered why Niemann kidnapped Shino's mom since no one seems to recognize her, which suggests that she hasn't been playing publicly? I have a feeling we'll see next month (or the month after).

    1. Yeah, I wonder about that too, but maybe she has been playing but under a different name?
In any case, Niemann is probably the biggest mystery in Shinohayu so I hope we'll learn more soon.

    2. Speaking of different names, in chapter 25 Nana called Niemann "Lotta", but in this chapter her first name is "Berthilde". So was "Lotta" a fake name or a nickname given by Nana all along?

    3. Good question. Clearly, there are many things we don't know about Niemann.

    4. niemann was recognized at least twice (kanna, and by a detective in an early chapter), so I think she's well known. it's more likely that nagatake just doesn't stay up to date with the pro scene. it was mentioned by kounoura that she didn't play professionally for long.

    5. Niemann is well known but I think what the OP meant was why no one recognizes Shiratsuki Nana. If Nana played with Niemann on the world stage, then surely Hayafune Nagisa and others would recognize the name.

  2. It seems that Niemann first appearance (I mean first debut, not only mentioned) is in this chapter, I have several questions:
    1. In Saki main series is Niemann still the world champion, or she retired?
    2. Was Shiratsuki's mother powerful enough to compete on world stage, so she was speculated and kidnapped by Niemann?
    3. Is Kanna a powerful pro player in Saki main series?
    4. Was Niemann in the same generation as Saki's mother, Ai Arctander?

    1. 1) the world champion in the main saki series is shino; with how shinohayu is set up, niemann likely lost to her in the end
      2) yeah it's speculated that she was kidnapped and "hypnotized" by niemann because she's that good. it makes sense too because shino herself learnt most of her mahjong from her mom
      3) kanna was loosely referenced once in the main series (by satoha, i believe?), so we can assume kanna went pro since a high school student knows about her. her power is up for debate right now. i believe her inevitable level up in the shinohayu series was a recent development by ritz.
      4) hard to say for sure. it's definitely possible, but imo it's more likely that they're a diff generation. we know that kuro is a baby in the shinohayu series, so saki must be a baby as well, that means ai arctander is likely younger than shino's mom by 12 years (assuming that they gave birth around the same age). so if niemann's age is around nana's age, we can assume she's a generation older than ai arctander.

    2. Thank you very much for answering. Is it possible that we will have Ai Arctander vs Niemann or Ai Arctander vs Shino's mother? It would be interesting, and let us understand more about World stage.
Moreover, in chapter 57 of Saki, page 14, the dialogue between Fujita and Kazekoshi high schools' coach mentioned about Blumenthal sisters with Niemann. In German, Blumenthal is equal to "Flowerdale" and being equal to "Bloomingdale" in English. I suspect that this German family (I assume) would be in world stage, and I suspect that they would have similar abilities saki has (since Saki's name in Japanese/Chinese is flower blossom, corresponding to Rinshankaihou) what does Akio think about this, with these potential world-class players?

    3. We don't know enough about Arctander to say if she played on the world stage but if she did then yes, we could have Arctander vs Niemann someday. I don't think the age difference would be a problem. But I think Arctander is going to be revealed in the Saki series first.

    4. Thank you for replying. How about Blumenthal sisters, as mentioned in Saki chapter 57?

    5. Them too. We know Ritz sometimes mentions characters and then many many chapters later they make an appearance. So yeah, why not.
Also, speaking of German characters, Alexandra Windheim could be part of Niemann's team too. I think in the current point in Shinohayu she'd be like 19 or so.

    6. Thank you. Another question is that is Fujishiro Nanami a pro player in the rankings in Saki main series?

    7. I would think so. She has the level to be a pro but we really don't know.
