  2. Thanks!

I, too, have no idea what she did there. And I love that comment.

Normally, that 4-man discard marks all of 2, 3, 5 and 6 as dangerous, doesn’t it? Because it may come from a 344 or 445 shape. So if Yuzu goes by that logic, then she should avoid discarding the 2 after seeing the 4 (and she would do the same if Aina had discarded the 1). It seems that Yuzu rather senses ryanmen waits (supported by the fact that Chihiro has one and Yuzu feels it), but then it’s not clear why we’re shown that she’s focusing her attention on the 4 man in the discard pool.

    1. Not exactly. The 4m discard makes it look like Aina doesn't need a 2m. Yuzu is wary of discarding tiles other players might want to call. So Aina sets up a trap for her. She discards the 4m to lure Yuzu into discarding a 2m.

If you had a 344 shape, normally you wouldn't discard the 4 because you might get another one to make a 444 triplet. Or you might get a 2, then you can discard the 4, which means you don't need another 2.

    2. By all means, if you can afford to keep all three tiles. But if you have 344 and reach tempai or decide to discard one of these tiles because other tiles are better still, you discard the 4 because 34 provides a better wait (unless you need a pair, of course). No? I thought this was a standard rule of thumb that, flipped for defence, marks 2 and 5 as dangerous.

I don’t see how Aina discarding the 1 would make the 2 look more dangerous than her discarding the 4 did.

    3. An even more interesting question is: why does Aina want to get a 2m from Yuzu anyway? She has a 34m shape, it would be easier and faster to wait for a 2m or 5m like Richardson thinks.

The answer may have to do with what Yuzu does in order to win the first two hands. Yuzu delays her hands on purpose before winning them. Normally, you want to delay your opponent's hands, not your own. So why does she do that?

In the team tournament, Chihiro won all hands, no one could win a hand before she did. So how come Yuzu is faster than Chihiro now?

Well, maybe, delaying your own hand is the best strategy to counter Chihiro's ability. Aina and Shino both notice Yuzu delaying her own hands in the beginning. Then maybe Aina copies Yuzu strategy and comes up with a "slow method" to get a 2m: calling it from Yuzu.

We also see Chihiro easily winning the 3rd hand of the game. So possibly this counter only works when Chihiro uses her "lowest setting of power" so to speak. As soon as Chihi powers up a little, it may not work anymore or not as well.

I guess we'll have to keep reading to see if this is true or not.

    4. Discarding the 1 wouldn't make the 2 look more dangerous. It would be the simple, common, fast way to proceed but apparently you can't win against Chihiro that way.

    5. For me, discarding a 1 would make 2 somewhat dangerous due to people usually would change a 1-3 wait to a 34 wait. Playing by logic you wouldn't discard a 4 to change your wait from a 34 to a 1-3 wait, unless you are going for a chanta kind. Yes. there may be a chance of a 344, but with a open hand I personally would still keep the 344 for a chi or pon if I'm not in tenpai.

Also looking at Chihiro's last hand, she still hasn't activated her ability, which I guess her ability only works when she is the dealer. We will probably find out in the next chapter(hopefully).

    6. Yes, discarding the 4 seems like the better choice to lure Yuzu into discarding the 2 for a chi.

About Chihi's ability, I'm not sure we know enough yet. We'll have to wait to find out. Looking forward to it.
