Well, this must be a blow. Kanna was always an easy-winner but her motivation, competitiveness and overall strength isn't even close to Shino and gap widens. Idk where this is goind but there is a reason why Shino became a pro and I don't remember Kanna ever being mentioned as one.
Kanna's strength isn't close to Shino of course but her competitiveness is sky high. No one is more competitive than Kanna. That's why she's doing this. It's unlikely Kanna can ever be as strong as Shino but her competitiveness forces her to keep trying.
So I went back to older chapters after Shino’s moment of reminiscence… (It’s in chapter 62 for anyone else wondering.)
Upon rereading chapters 52–53, I can’t help but wonder what happened there, in Mukunoki’s team qualifier match. We’re shown her going on a dealer repeat streak (up to the start of 11 bonus) in East 1, winning a 1500-point hand every single time. But the next thing we know, she’s ended the game with +133,500 while all other schools are some 12 to 17 thousand below zero. We’re not shown how this happened, and none of the characters ever talk about it. Feels bad, man! Judging by the negative scores, she must have gotten a dealer yakuman tsumo. Indeed, if we assume she kept getting 1500-point wins until that, the numbers do work out: 19 (!) 1500-point wins followed by a yakuman give exactly +133,500, and the exact distribution of the other schools’ scores seems plausible too. But why was there no mention of that yakuman?!

Let's add that the first mention of Yaji Kanon was in chapter 43 when we are told she won the Interhigh 2 years ago and became a pro a year later. Later, she and another pro lost to Chihiro (as we are told again in this chapter).
About Chihiro's yakuman, the theory is that when one of her opponents falls below 1500 points, she lifts her own 1500-point-win restriction and wins a yakuman so all her opponents be busted at the same time in the most spectacular fashion. However, winning a yakuman is nothing compared to winning 19 or whatever dealer repeats in a row so maybe that's why Ritz found it not worth mentioning.
Ah, that’s an interesting theory. Makes sense. Still feels weird that this wasn’t so much as mentioned. And she could just as well have made them all go bust by winning something much cheaper than a yakuman, so the fact she did specifically yakuman still seems very notable to me. Maybe it’s intentionally being downplayed. Chihiro was supposed to hold back in that match, too, but this hardly seems like holding back.
On that note, I couldn’t see any major difference between her play in that match, when she was supposedly “using only a fraction of her power”, and the match with Shino at the individuals later, where she had received permission to go all-out if need be.
More about older chapters (sorry): on chapter 68 page 6, we see a frame with Niemann, followed by a frame with Evelyn waving good bye to a woman, with some other woman by her side, off-frame. Was this scene ever shown anywhere else? I’ve looked through quite a few older-still chapters but haven’t been able to find anything.
Now, the reason I’m asking is twofold. For one thing, it’s apparently Shino’s memory. But more importantly… much more importantly… that woman she’s waving to? it’s the same policewoman that Shino and Kōsuke submitted their missing-person report to as shown just the chapter before (ch67)! Is she in cahoots with them or what?
Yeah, it looks like Evelyn is blocking Niemann from the policewoman's questions.
The police knew Niemann was in the vicinity when Nana disappeared (as we see in ch67). They must have tried to question Niemann (as a possible witness) when she came to Japan last year.
Seems plausible, I guess. Thanks. That idea doesn’t occur to me when looking at that picture, but I’m going to assume it’s that, as it fits the rest of the story.
