OK, I recognized this girl both from appearance and from name, but I only just discovered who Izumi is!… after I looked her up on Wikia. (I’m sorry I didn’t remember her name.) Wow.
This chapter makes it sound like the nickname refers to a single person, possibly a single person per club, but earlier we definitely got pictures of three, and the text seemed to imply that all three were from the same club. I suspect the Japanese text may have been a little more ambiguous, as they don’t have grammatical number, but there were references to a “group” (at least in the translation) and in any case the pictures are pretty clear.
Mekimeki made us believe that the Malefic Star was a group of 3 people, just like the club president made Toki and the others believe they would be playing against several players from a club team.
In this chapter, we and Toki discover that the Malefic Star is just one person. It's true the Japanese text can be more ambiguous but Mekimeki clearly wanted us to think that the Malefic Star was a group.
However, there's probably going to be a group of 3 "friends" or at least 3 people who know each other, the Malefic Star being one of them and Izumi another one.
One little detail, not directly related to the above but curious anyway. In the character tables from Saki vol 14 (which I translated a long time ago), under the Notes for "that character" it says: "Has a crossbreed dog". So it's not Mekimeki who made up the dog now, it comes from Ritz from way back. ^_^
Yeah, it’s certainly possible that Mekimeki deliberately misled us using that picture and wording. It’s just not entirely clear to me yet that this is the case, but only time will tell. I like your idea that the picture is not a lie but rather the Malefic Star is simply only one of the three people in it.
