Saki 244: Enma

The first thing you'll notice about this chapter is that it has quite a few non-inked, no-tone panels. Nothing that we haven't seen before but it's been ages since we had such an unfinished chapter. Ritz must have been at the limit here.

About the chapter's title. Enma is the Japanese name for the King of Hell in Buddhist mythology, also known as King Yama. We could localize the chapter and replace Enma with "King of Hell" but I thought it was better to leave it like that.

Finally, there is one confusing, ambiguous line in page 11 so let's clarify it here. Rinkai's coach says that in semifinals, Myeonghwa got the top score in that "section". Hmm, okay but what is that "section"? Does it mean the lieutenant match?
But no, that can't be because the top scorer in the lieutenant match of semifinals was Hisa. Myeongwha was merely 3rd and she didn't "pull ahead of the others", rather both Hisa and Hiroe shortened the point gap with her.
Well, it turns out Myeonghwa was the winner of the first hanchan of semifinals. That's what that "section" must mean here. This is not easy to figure out because the mid-game scores were not given (this was in chapter 123) and it needs to be calculated manually.

  1. Wow, Hisa got 3 tsumo on bad waits in a row? That's something. Thanks for the translation.

  2. Ritz must have spent a whole week on just that one page with Awai, that's why rest of the chapter is so rough.
Thanks for the insightful commentary and chapter.

    1. Well if Shizu doesn't get to play then Saki doesn't get to play and that would be veeery strange... so I wouldn't worry about that.
